普罗米修斯Prometheus十分精明,能预测将来。他虽然是Titan巨人,但预测巨人族Titans会败在宙斯Zeus手下,所以普罗米修司Prometheus说服弟弟艾皮米修斯Epimetheus一块在战斗中支持宙斯Zeus。普罗米修斯Prometheus这个名字就是先知先觉的意思。pro-这个前缀就是预先的,提前的意思。

如:protect [prE5tekt] v. 保护、 守卫某人。pro-+tect,在前面遮盖起来,引申为保护。

战斗胜利后的宙斯Zeus没把普罗米修斯Prometheus和艾皮米修斯Epimetheus像其它巨人Titans一样关进地狱,而是委派他们负责创造动物的人类。艾皮米修斯Epimetheus与哥哥的性格特点相反,Epimetheus这个名字是后知后觉的意思,他做事一时冲动,然后后悔改变主意。epi-这个前缀有在之间;在之后的意思。

艾皮米修斯先造了动物,并把好的本领都分给的动物:有些会飞,有些会潜水,有些凶猛,有些有硬壳保护;而他造的人赤裸柔弱,没能力在各种动物中角逐求存,于是艾皮米修斯后悔了。

这个时候哥哥普罗米修斯Prometheus接过了任务,他聪慧而睿智,了解天神的种子蕴藏在泥土中,于是他捧起泥土,用河水把它沾湿调和起来,根据世界的主宰,即天神的模样,捏成人形。为了给这泥人以生命,他从动物的灵魂中摄取了善与恶两种性格,将它们封进人的胸膛里。智慧女神雅典娜惊叹普罗米修斯的创造物,于是便朝具备一半灵魂的泥人吹起了神气,使它获得了灵性。同样的事情在地球的其他地方也上演着:女娲用黄土混和河水造出了人,所以东方人是黄皮肤的;耶和华上帝在创世纪第六天创造了各种动物后,根据我们的形象用地上的尘土造出一个男性,名叫亚当,神话中人类的始祖。

不一样的神话有着相同的一点,就是人是用土造的,所以英语中人--human一词的构成中hum表示泥土的意思(来源于拉丁词根 humus 土)。各种人都是土做的,都是泥人,所以不论怎么样努力洗澡,身上还是有泥。干的泥土不可以成人,需要有水,所以humid 表示潮湿的。同样,带有hum词根的词一般和泥、土有关:

humble1 [5hQmbl] adj. 谦逊的,卑下的,微贱的。hum表示泥土,地面自己伏在地面贴近泥土表示谦逊的,谦卑的。
