跟屁虫原本指像影子一样跟在别人身后（follow somebody around like a shadow）的人，引申为没我们的见解，盲目附和别人（repeat what others say），或没我们的想法只能模仿别人的人（a person who copies what somebody else does because they have no ideas of their own），带有贬义。
跟屁虫也可比喻跟在大人身后行动的孩子，是一个中性表达。
